Audi has had a storied history on the international sports stage. From the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series to the world-renowned Audi MedCup, Audi has firmly established itself in the international sailing world, which is one of prestige, heritage, and fierce competition. In reality, sailing and motorsport aren’t far from each other – both require vision, cutting-edge technology, and copious amounts of courage. 08/10/2009 – Audi, manufacturer of premium automobiles and consummate worldwide sailing advocate, has partnered with the Dana Point Yacht Club to present the 2009 Audi Cup Charity J24 Sailing Regatta benefitting the Ocean Institute located in Orange County’s Dana Point Harbor. The event begins the evening of Friday, September 11 with a VIP Sponsor Reception and Dinner at the Ocean Institute, with heavy racing on Saturday September 12. Sunday rounds out with the conclusion of sailing and of course, the awarding of the inaugural Audi Cup to the fastest J24 Regatta team. Scroll down to get aboard our spectator boat (Saturday) to get up close to the racing action! The Audi Cup Charity J24 Regatta is a subset of competition within the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, which also includes a PHRF Series. The Ocean Institute, perfectly situated at the edge of a Marine Protected Area on the Pacific, is committed to a simple ethos: Deny no child the opportunity to learn about the ocean. The Institute’s sponsor-driven programs continue to enhance the lives of children in our community through their hands-on, experience-based learning model designed to engage students (and adults) of all ages. All proceeds from the regatta go directly to the Ocean Institute’s programs.

Although the J24 class sailboat isn’t quite the same size as the TransPacific 52’ yachts that race in the Audi MedCup (whose spinnaker sail is the size of a tennis court), the J24 is nimble, quick, and piloted by some of the most competitive sailors in the sport. Since all J24s share the same dimensions and specifications, this level playing field is sure to bring out the skill required to take home the 2009 Audi Cup. To follow the racing action, local families are invited aboard our spectator boat for a front-row seat (proceeds benefit the Ocean Institute). Other activities include a pancake breakfast, J24 sailboat tours, as well as an Audi shuttle between the island on which the Dana Point Yacht Club resides and the Ocean Institute on the harbor’s edge, so that guests may participate in the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, which runs concurrently. All ages welcome!
