What is Audi TDI? Simply put, a revolution. Take a moment to think of what you want out of your next car. Is it Utility? Economy? Style? What if you could have all three, and
be environmentally responsible at the same time? Enter Audi's new Clean Diesel technology, dubbed TDI (for Turbo Diesel Injection). Now, throw away everything you know about diesel: Clean Diesel is different.
What’s different about Clean Diesel?
The answer to that question is surprising: Nothing. Clean Diesel isn't a new type of diesel fuel; it's a new technique of using the fuel that's already at the pumps in a way that doesn't smell, isn't noisy, and exceeds today's most stringent emissions requirements – that means no black plumes of soot from the tailpipe like old diesel engines. It all adds up to a convenient and responsible way to travel. Oh, did we mention it gets great gas mileage too?
729 and the Audi Mileage Marathon
To get your attention Audi put together the Audi Mileage Marathon, a 4,888 mile coast-to-coast endurance test of Clean Diesel, to show what TDI Power can do for you. The course snaked through major cities up and down the States; the results were staggering. Even the 7-seater Q7 SUV with the 3.0 liter TDI engine averaged 27.6 mpg and 729 miles between fill-ups. A straight shot on a map from LA to NY would take a little more than 3 tanks of fuel.
TDI Power: Not just for race cars.
How did Audi develop a reliable, efficient, and powerful engine that could withstand lap after lap after lap on the racetrack? TDI Power may have been born in the design room (with the Audi R10 and R15 race cars), but it has been proven time and time again on-track to be faster, cleaner, quieter, and far more fuel efficient than its gasoline predecessors. To Audi, all they smell about diesel is Victory.
Comparative Exposition: How does TDI Power stack up?
How does Clean Diesel compare to hybrid technology? Many manufacturers are now making hybrid versions of their models to appeal to the pocketbooks and common sense of their customers. While Audi is not ignoring the potentials of hybridization, they are focusing on the need for combustion engines. Until the transportation industry can completely unhook from fossil fuels and be 100% zero-emissions, some form of petroleum products will have to be used. TDI Power is designed to use less gallons of fuel mile-for-mile than regular gasoline engines. Fewer gallons used means less carbon dioxide, less smog, less crude oil. TDI Power means you don’t have to sacrifice performance for responsibility.

Bang for the Buck: The true cost of Clean Diesel
Diesel can sometimes cost more per gallon, but that doesn’t mean it costs more per tank. Let’s compare apples to apples by using the 2009 Audi Q7 3.6 FSI (91 Octane Gasoline) and the new 2009 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI (Clean Diesel). Both Q7s have a 26.4 gallon fuel tank, so that’s fair.

A 300+ mile difference in range means that diesel fuel would have to be over 40% more expensive than premium gasoline to cost the same to use.
