Fall is a great time to be outside and get out and about in Mission Viejo. While we traditionally think of summer as fun, adventurous, and relaxing, fall is often an opportunity for families to gather and spend time together. It's important to find events and activities that appeal to everyone, especially with a large group. There are many fun events in our area this fall, whether you're young or old. Read on to learn about the top fun family activities in the Mission Viejo area.

Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade

The Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade is a tradition for many families in Orange County and the surrounding area. For over 100 years, the Anaheim community has taken their love of tradition, family, and fun to the downtown streets. Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson led the first one, which featured a parade with floats and music.

To participate in the parade, fill out the form on the website. The parade route is typically down Center Street Promenade through downtown and concludes at the Anaheim Packing House. This year the parade is scheduled for October 29. There are also many booths so you can participate in activities ranging from pumpkin carving or painting to bobbing for apples.

Children 12 and under are welcome to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume to join the Kiddie Costume Contest. There's even an opportunity to dress your pets in their best for a chance to win the Halloween Pet Pawrade. For more information or to learn how you can volunteer to help, visit the website.

Apple Butter Festival

Within driving distance of Anaheim, you and your family can experience farm-to-table life by visiting Oak Glen. The festival is an exciting way to spend a few hours outdoors in the gorgeous California autumn weather. The fun-filled, family-friendly event includes activities such as apple butter making, wagon rides, kids crafts, sip and paint classes, an Oak Glen treasure hunt, pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, and a doughnut toss competition. There will also be live music and carriage tours.

Oak Glen is at 12201 South Oak Glen Road in Yucaipa. The festival will take place November 25-27. The farm itself is open daily from December through July. Peak apple picking season is from August through November. Visit during this period and participate in picking apples and other produce, try some fresh apple cider, and let the little ones have fun at the petting zoo. For more information or to learn about upcoming events, visit the website and fill out the online form.

Annual Pumpkin Launch Discovery Cube

Discovery Cube, the children's museum in Anaheim, focuses on learning through exploration and experimentation. The annual pumpkin launch is a great way for your kids to learn some of the laws of physics firsthand while having fun and getting messy.

In a collaborative effort with Cal State Fullerton, Discovery Cube organizes this science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) event to encourage the community's children to pursue careers in these ever-growing fields. This competition challenges participants to build their own pumpkin launching machines. There will also be other hands-on activities. Food trucks will be there to keep your children satisfied and help their growing minds stay nourished.

The event typically occurs at Cal State Fullerton on North State College Boulevard. Pumpkins fly high in the sky on the Fullerton Athletic Field. Although the date this year is still unknown, you can keep updated by visiting the website for the latest news.

This year's Pumpkin Palooza takes place through October from Thursday through Sunday each week. Other activities at the event include bumper car rides, a dance party, inflatable corn and hay bale mazes, and the opportunity to see little ones in their best costumes. Check the website for more details or to learn about dance party times.

Farmer's Market

Even something simple can become a fun family event. Take advantage of the fresh weather and head to the Farmer's Market. The downtown Anaheim Farmer's Market is a phenomenal place to be saturated in the community, grab some fresh fruits and veggies for your home and family, and support local community members. Few places are as welcoming and bustling as this locale. Talk to local growers, eat food made only the way Californians can, and peruse the items made by local artisans.

The market takes place every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 435 West Center Street Promenade. There is free 2-hour parking at Parking Structure 3 on Lehman and Anaheim with a ticket and validation. To learn more, visit the website.

Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch

Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch is one of the few real pumpkin patches in Orange County. The pumpkin patch runs from the middle of September through the end of October in Irvine. When visiting Tanaka Farms, guests can participate in a number of activities, including arts and crafts and wagon rides.

You can purchase tickets online, and general admission begins at $10 per person. Children under the age of 2 can enter for free. You can also purchase tickets for unlimited wagon rides and a Barnyard Educational Exhibit for an additional fee. Tanaka Farms is on University Drive. Because the area is experiencing construction, be sure to plan extra time so you can have the safest drive and arrive early for the best parking. Visit the website for more information.
